Hi Reader,
Welcome to the Google Sheets Tips newsletter #339, your Monday morning espresso, in spreadsheet form!
\nI have a favor to ask.
\nIf you enjoy this newsletter, or my courses, videos or membership, will you help me improve them?
\nIt's been a while since I've run a full audience survey, and I'd love to get some fresh insight into any challenges you have using Sheets, how you use AI, how I can help, etc.
\nCan you spare a few minutes to fill out my 2025 audience survey?
\nTake the 2025 Survey |
Thank you! 🙏
\nLots to share today, ranging from beginner to advanced level. So take you what you want and leave the rest! ;)

Ooooh! A new AI Function is in the works for Google Sheets!
AI() lets you access Gemini AI directly in your Sheet via familiar function syntax.
\nOne immediate application will be sentiment analysis with survey data, which previously required coding knowledge.
\nIt's currently only available to Alpha testers, so will probably look like this in your Sheet:
\nSneak peek at the AI Function

I don't recall St Patrick's Day being such a big deal in the UK when I grew up, but it seems to be hugely popular over here in the US!
\nAnd since St Patrick's day falls on a Monday this year, which is the day that I send this newsletter, I thought it would make for a good newsletter subject.
\nI even made a template for you to go with today's email 😃
\nGrab your free copy of the template
\nSo, without further ado, here are some fun and fiendish St Patrick's day ideas in Sheets:
\nTry these CHAR formulas in your Google Sheet to add emojis:
\nAnd, perhaps most aptly, this one:
\nHere's a color palette of hex values for St Patrick's Day:
\n#224D17
#099441
#60A830
#9FDA40
#D9DF1D
Set these as custom background cell colors to get St Patrick's Day colors in your Sheet.
\nOpen the cell background option from the toolbar and select custom:
\nUnder \"Hex\", add one of the values from above:
\nAnd voila!
\nAssuming we have this list of hex color codes in cells B2:B7, we can create a lovely gradient sparkline formula:
\nwith this formula:
\nOk, this is one for the crazies amongst us...
\nA single sparkline formula to generate a four leaf clover (technical name, a quadrifolium).
\nIt uses the LET function, some math, and HSTACK/VSTACK to generate a list of x-y coordinates.
\nThe sparkline wrapper then displays the green line.
\nI won't print the formula here, but feel free to grab it from template here.
\nLastly, here's a sweet alternative to last week's SCAN formula, submitted by several readers:
\nwith the win streak data (e.g. \"WWLWWWWDW\") in cell A1.
\nIt shows the power of the SPLIT function!
\nNice work, team! 🤩
\nIf you enjoyed this newsletter, please forward it to a friend who might enjoy it.
\nHave a great week!
\nCheers,
Ben
P.S. The Google Meet feature we all need.
