Sheets Tip #339: Make your Sheets green 💚

Brought to you by:

Hi Reader,

Welcome to the Google Sheets Tips newsletter #339, your Monday morning espresso, in spreadsheet form!

I have a favor to ask.

If you enjoy this newsletter, or my courses, videos or membership, will you help me improve them?

It's been a while since I've run a full audience survey, and I'd love to get some fresh insight into any challenges you have using Sheets, how you use AI, how I can help, etc.

Can you spare a few minutes to fill out my 2025 audience survey?

Thank you! 🙏

Lots to share today, ranging from beginner to advanced level. So take you what you want and leave the rest! ;)

Ooooh! A new AI Function is in the works for Google Sheets!

AI() lets you access Gemini AI directly in your Sheet via familiar function syntax.

One immediate application will be sentiment analysis with survey data, which previously required coding knowledge.

It's currently only available to Alpha testers, so will probably look like this in your Sheet:

➜ Sheets Tip #339: St Patrick's Day in Google Sheets

I don't recall St Patrick's Day being such a big deal in the UK when I grew up, but it seems to be hugely popular over here in the US!

And since St Patrick's day falls on a Monday this year, which is the day that I send this newsletter, I thought it would make for a good newsletter subject.

I even made a template for you to go with today's email 😃

Grab your free copy of the template

So, without further ado, here are some fun and fiendish St Patrick's day ideas in Sheets:

St Patrick's Day Emojis

Try these CHAR formulas in your Google Sheet to add emojis:

=CHAR(127808) displays a 4 leaf clover 🍀
=CHAR(128154) displays a green hear 💚
=CHAR(127470)&CHAR(127466) displays the Irish flag 🇮🇪

And, perhaps most aptly, this one:

=CHAR(127866) which outputs a beer mug! 🍺

St Patrick's Day Color Palette

Here's a color palette of hex values for St Patrick's Day:

#224D17
#099441
#60A830
#9FDA40
#D9DF1D

Set these as custom background cell colors to get St Patrick's Day colors in your Sheet.

Open the cell background option from the toolbar and select custom:

Under "Hex", add one of the values from above:

And voila!

Assuming we have this list of hex color codes in cells B2:B7, we can create a lovely gradient sparkline formula:

with this formula:

=SPARKLINE( SEQUENCE(5,1,1,0) , HSTACK( VSTACK( "charttype", "color1", "color2", "color3", "color4", "color5") , VSTACK( "bar" , B3:B7 )))

St Patrick's Day Four Leaf Clover Formula

Ok, this is one for the crazies amongst us...

A single sparkline formula to generate a four leaf clover (technical name, a quadrifolium).

It uses the LET function, some math, and HSTACK/VSTACK to generate a list of x-y coordinates.

The sparkline wrapper then displays the green line.

I won't print the formula here, but feel free to grab it from template here.

Reader Alternative to Last Week's Formula

Lastly, here's a sweet alternative to last week's SCAN formula, submitted by several readers:

=ArrayFormula(MAX(LEN(SPLIT(A1,"DL",1))))

with the win streak data (e.g. "WWLWWWWDW") in cell A1.

It shows the power of the SPLIT function!

Nice work, team! 🤩

If you enjoyed this newsletter, please forward it to a friend who might enjoy it.

Have a great week!

Cheers,
Ben

Split function in Google Sheets

Brought to you by: Hi Reader, Welcome to the Google Sheets Tips newsletter #340, your Monday morning espresso, in spreadsheet form! I was reminded this week of the power of consistency. In January, I set a goal in Strava to ride my bike 3 times a week. Nothing crazy, but it's what I can realistically fit in with current work and family commitments. Aside from a few weeks of sickness and snow in January, I've done a pretty good job at sticking to it. And yesterday, I could notice a difference....

Brought to you by: Hi Reader, Welcome to the Google Sheets Tips newsletter #338, your Monday morning espresso, in spreadsheet form! After a last bite from winter last week, it looks like spring is finally here where I live on the east coast of the US. The daffodils are growing, the box turtles are out sunning themselves on logs by the river, and temperatures are forecast in the 70s (in the 20s celcius). Wherever you are, I hope you're enjoying the changing of the seasons. ➜ News I.Google...
