Sheets Tip 313: The "@" Date Menu

Brought to you by:

Hi Reader,

Welcome to the Google Sheets Tips newsletter #313, your Monday morning espresso, in spreadsheet form!

I published my first Google Sheets tutorial 10 years ago, in October 2014. Wow, time flies!

Since then, I’ve published 250+ free tutorials on my website, 313 editions of this newsletter, and 21 online courses.

We live in an amazing age where it’s possible for an individual contributor to reach a global audience with their ideas. I’m incredibly grateful to be able to experience that.

I want to continue helping you in this way for the next five years, then the next five after that.

This Thursday, I'm sending a special email announcing what's coming next to help you on your journey.

My mission remains the same: to help as many of you as possible with Sheets, data analysis, and automation.

See you on Thursday!

In the meantime, in today's newsletter, we're looking at a nifty way to add dates to your Google Sheets, via the @-menu.

This was introduced ~2 years ago, so it's relatively new to the Sheets world. It's super easy to use so I encourage you to check it out!

In recent years, Google have made a big deal of the "smart canvas" idea, where your different Workspace apps are more closely integrated.

In Sheets, we see this with the file smart chips that show file metadata.

The next phase of integration is with third-parties. Third-party smart chips, which pull in rich data from third-party apps, are now available in Google Docs. I imagine we'll see these available in Sheets too, in the not too distant future.

➜ Sheets Tip #313: The "@" Date Menu

A nice, easy topic for this week, but one that is nevertheless super useful!

Take a blank cell in your Sheet and type "@" followed by "date":

Typing "@date" into a cell brings up the date picker object, with today's date highlighted.

Press Enter to select today's date or use the picker to select a different date.

Other @ Date menu choices

There are a several other date menu choices available.

Try typing the following:

  • @today → inserts today's date
  • @tomorrow → inserts tomorrow's date
  • @yesterday → inserts yesterday's date
  • @mon or @monday → Brings up list of recent Monday's (works for other days of the week e.g. @tue or @tuesday)
  • @next → week on Monday or 2 weeks on Monday
  • @next tue or @next tuesday → week on Tuesday (works for other days of the week too)
  • @last → week last Monday, or one before that
  • @last wed or @last wednesday → week last Wednesday, or one before that (works for other days of the week too)

Did I miss any?

What else does the "@" menu offer

The "@" menu is more than just dates of course.

You can also add people, files, calendar events, emojis and components like Tables, Rating chips, or Dropdowns!

If you enjoyed this newsletter, please forward it to a friend who might enjoy it.

Have a great week!

Cheers,
Ben

Brought to you by: Hi Reader, Welcome to the Google Sheets Tips newsletter #376, your Monday morning espresso, in spreadsheet form! I've been using Gemini and Gemini Canvas a lot recently for various projects. It's mind-blowing how quick it is at generating formulas and scripts that work. We're definitely at the threshold (or maybe already past it 🤔) where it doesn't make sense to write your own complex formulas or code from scratch (for specific problems with limited scope). Having said...

We're still in an ice box on the east coast of the US with the snow set to hang around for a while yet. It's beautiful but I am looking forward to the ice melting so it's easier to get around. The Potomac river is covered with ice Today's newsletter is not directly related to Google Sheets. Instead, I'm sharing the sources I use to stay informed of AI...

Brought to you by: Hi Reader, Welcome to the Google Sheets Tips newsletter #374, your Monday morning espresso, in spreadsheet form! Coming to you from the cold and snowy East Coast of the US. We didn't quite get the 20 inches of snow forecast earlier in the week, but we did end up getting around 8 - 10 inches of very dry, powdery snow. And with the temps rarely getting above 20 F (-7 C) this week, it's going to stick around for a while yet. School is closed so you'll probably find me and my...
