ST387: Do You Know How To Round Numbers To The Nearest Hundred, Thousand?

Hi Reader,

Welcome to the Google Sheets Tips newsletter #387, your Monday morning espresso, in spreadsheet form!

I'm traveling so no news section again this week. But don't worry, I'll have a full recap of all the relevant Google Next announcements soon.

➜ Sheets Tip #387: Do You Know How To Round Numbers To The Nearest Hundred, Thousand?

We’ve all used the ROUND function to tidy up messy decimals.

But do you know one of its best tricks?

It works equally as well to round to the nearest ten or hundred or thousand using negative numbers, in the same way as with positive numbers.

Most of us use ROUND like this:

=ROUND(A1, 2)

to get two decimal places.

But when you go negative, the rounding moves to the "left" of the decimal point.

To the nearest 10:

=ROUND(A1, -1)

To the nearest 100:

=ROUND(A1, -2)

To the nearest 1,000:

=ROUND(A1, -3)

Example

Suppose you have a line item of $92,389 in your project expenses. Those granular dollars and cents are often just "noise" in a high-level summary.

Use the ROUND formula to fix it. For example:

=ROUND(92389, -3)

outputs a clean $92,000.

It’s one of those things that you wonder how you did without it in hindsight; it’s a total game-changer for data reporting.

Happy rounding!
