In this tip, we look at how to use the Split Text To Columns custom option to perform unusual splits with your data.
For example, suppose we have a dataset like this and we want to separate the step numbers and the tasks:
Highlight the 10 steps and then go to the menu: Data > Split text to columns
In the Split text to columns menu, select custom:
Enter the custom rule, in this case, a colon followed by a space ": " to separate the text:
And there we have it!
We've separated the steps from the tasks.
I often reach for the SPLIT function when doing tasks like this, but this is a good reminder that the Split text to columns feature is available and often much quicker to use.
